5th Avenue Awards
Honoring High School Musicals
The 5th Avenue Theatre Awards are a high school version of the Tony Awards. They honor outstanding achievement in high schools and celebrate the hard work and dedication that Washington State high school students and educators put forth to make their school musical productions a success. This program was created to shine the spotlight on musical theater similarly to the way sports are regularly celebrated in schools.
How it works
Participating schools have their musical evaluated by at least two trained theater industry representatives from the greater Seattle area and Washington State. Each evaluator makes specific recommendations for nominations in all categories. After all productions have been assessed, the evaluators meet to review the productions, discuss the nominations, and select award recipients.
The Ceremony
The nominees and representatives from participating schools are invited to attend the Awards Ceremony, modeled on the Tony Awards©, to honor outstanding achievement in high school musical theater throughout the state of Washington. The ceremony features performances of production numbers from the nominated musicals, performances from nominees, and an opening production number with students representing each of the participating schools.
