How Shows Work

Here at RHS

You (or your student) have been cast in a show. In general, here is what to expect:

Musicals & Plays

PARENT MEETING

Parents should attend the Parent Meeting for your student’s show. There, you will get information about the show and have an opportunity to turn in your Show Order Form.

SHOW ORDER FORM

First thing, parents should fill out and turn in the Order Form for the show. This is how you pay for your student’s meal during tech week’s long double rehearsal and how you purchase things like a show t-shirt, show photos, and a Shout Out for your student in the program.

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals begin the week after the cast list is posted. In general, rehearsals are right after school Monday-Friday. Specific rehearsal schedules will be determined as the show begins.

TECH WEEK

Tech Week is the week before performances begin. Your show calendar will have specific dates. Attendance is mandatory and rehearsals are a little longer. On the Monday before opening night, we usually have a long double rehearsal, taking a break for dinner.

PERFORMANCES

Shows run for two consecutive weekends on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. All shows are at 7 pm in the RHS Performing Arts Center.

PICK-UP REHEARSAL

The week between show weekends, there is usually one pick-up rehearsal on Wednesday.

STAGE MANAGER

There will be a student Stage Manager who will give you all kinds of important information about the show schedule. So expect to get regular emails from them.

HELP OUT

As performances get closer, parents should watch for a Sign-Up Genius email where you can volunteer to work in the ticket booth or Will Call table, bake goodies for our concessions, and sell concessions and stargrams. It’s a fun way to pitch in and meet other theatre parents!

CAST & CREW PARTY

On closing night, there is usually a party for the cast and crew hosted by one of the families.

DRAMA FEST

PARENT MEETING

Same as for Musicals & Plays.

SHOW ORDER FORM

Same as for Musicals & Plays, with the exception that there is not a tech dinner to pay for.

REHEARSALS

Drama Fest rehearsals are a little different from those for our regular shows. You will likely not be called every day. Each student director determines the rehearsal schedule and location for their show (not all rehearsals are at the school). It can be a bit of a juggle if you are cast in multiple shows. Be prepared to be flexible.

TECH WEEK

Tech Week for Drama Fest is a little different. Each show gets a set amount of time on the stage. So your Tech Week schedule will vary based on what shows you are involved with. There is no long double rehearsal.

PERFORMANCES

The shows are split into two bills, Gold Bill and Green Bill. Gold Bill has more mature content and may not be appropriate for some audiences.

Drama Fest runs for four consecutive days from Tuesday through Friday. Gold Bill runs on Tuesday and Thursday; Green Bill runs on Wednesday and Friday. All shows are at 7 pm in the RHS Performing Arts Center.

PICK-UP REHEARSAL

Drama Fest doesn't have a pick-up rehearsal because all shows run during the same week.

STAGE MANAGER

Same as for Musicals & Plays.

HELP OUT

Same as for Musicals & Plays.

AWARDS CEREMONY

Following the final show on closing night of Drama Fest, there is an Awards Ceremony for both bills. Adjudicators view all shows and give out awards such as Best Leading Actor/Actress, Best Direction, Best Writing, and Best of Fest.

In addition, there are jars in the lobby labeled with the title of each show. Be sure to vote with your dollars by slipping cash into the jars for your favorite shows. The show whose jar has the most cash wins the Audience Choice Award.

CAST & CREW PARTY

The Awards Ceremony is followed by the Cast and Crew party.
